Turning Math into Magic: How Verna Chow Inspires Engagement and Growth

Stories & Spotlights
Verna Chow

At Oklahoma Virtual Charter Academy (OVCA), the goal is to provide students with a dynamic and supportive environment where they can excel academically while forming meaningful connections.

Through creative teaching methods, collaborative challenges, and a focus on connection, 7th-grade math teacher Verna Chow transforms math into a tool for empowerment.

For Verna, this mission is at the heart of her teaching. With over 20 years of experience, she has dedicated her career to making learning both impactful and enjoyable for her students.

Engaging Students Through Creative Teaching

Teaching math to middle schoolers might seem like a challenge, but Verna has developed innovative strategies to make lessons relatable and engaging. By incorporating students’ interests into her teaching, she ensures they stay motivated and excited to learn.

“Math doesn’t have to be intimidating,” Verna explains. “I design problems that align with their hobbies, like Minecraft or Roblox. For example, I might ask, ‘If you’re building something in Minecraft, how would you calculate the materials you need?’ This approach turns math into something they enjoy.”

By connecting lessons to real-life applications, Verna transforms math from a subject of apprehension into a tool of empowerment.

Encouraging Collaboration and Friendly Competition

At OVCA, students aren’t just excelling academically; they’re collaborating and creating connections along the way. Verna frequently incorporates team challenges and creative competitions to inspire her students.

One memorable event involved a Progress Learning Challenge where students competed to complete lessons. The teacher of the team with the fewest points had to take a pie to the face—a moment that brought laughter and excitement to the learning process.

“These kinds of activities show students that learning can be fun,” Verna shares. “They connect with their classmates, celebrate their progress, and see school as an enjoyable experience.”

Fostering Strong Connections in a Virtual Environment

At Oklahoma Virtual Charter Academy, the sense of community is deeply rooted in every aspect of the school experience. Verna has witnessed students form lasting friendships and meaningful connections, even across great distances.

“I had two students who met in fifth grade and became best friends despite living three hours apart,” Verna recalls. “They’ve stayed connected through online school and even meet up in person for birthdays and special occasions. It’s incredible to witness the bonds that form in this environment.”

These connections reflect the school’s commitment to creating a supportive and inclusive space where students feel valued.

Supporting Every Student’s Journey

Verna’s dedication extends beyond academics. She understands that students may face unique challenges, and she’s committed to helping them overcome obstacles to achieve their full potential.

“Many students come here seeking a safe, supportive environment,” Verna says. “It’s rewarding to watch them grow in confidence and thrive academically. I always remind my students, ‘Be brave and ask questions.’”

Her passion for teaching is evident in her individualized approach, ensuring that every student feels seen and supported.

Whether through interactive lessons, engaging activities, or in-person events, Oklahoma Virtual Charter Academy provides students with opportunities to learn, grow, and enjoy their educational journey.

“Our goal is to make learning meaningful and enjoyable,” Verna emphasizes. “Students are encouraged to explore their interests, build relationships, and discover their potential in a way that feels both fun and fulfilling.”
