As a Community Family Advisor (CFA) at Oklahoma Virtual Charter Academy, Dawn Waite plays a pivotal role in ensuring every student has the support they need to succeed. Community Family Advisor’s are an essential part of the online school’s mission, guiding students and their families through their educational journey. From onboarding families with in-person startup sessions to introducing them to the online platform, reviewing expectations, and navigating policies, Community Family Advisor’s provide a critical foundation for success. 

Dawn, who has been with the online school for over seven years, exemplifies the Community Family Advisor role through her unwavering dedication. She works closely with teachers to assess family needs, ensure consistent communication, and connect students to vital resources. By creating a network of support, Dawn helps students overcome challenges that go far beyond the classroom. 

Dawn’s journey at Oklahoma Virtual Chart Academy began with a passion for helping students succeed, no matter their circumstances. Her role allows her to advocate for students daily, addressing both academic and personal hurdles with care and determination. A Story of Resilience: From Homelessness to Graduation

Among the hundreds of students Dawn has mentored, one young woman’s story stands out. Having lost both parents, she found herself homeless, often couch-surfing or living out of her car. Despite the overwhelming odds, she was determined to finish high school. But to do so, she needed help. 

Dawn met this student when she enrolled at OVCA, during a critical point in her life. Dawn immediately connected her with essential resources to help her continue her education, despite the hardships she faced. 

When the student became pregnant, Dawn’s role in her life became even more critical. She connected her with the WIC program and local community groups, ensuring she had access to baby supplies and other essentials. Dawn also met her at libraries and local spots like McDonald’s, ensuring she had the support and guidance needed to stay on track with her coursework. 

Through Dawn’s encouragement, this young woman achieved a life-changing milestone—she graduated. In a touching turn of events, she finished her final assignments the day before her birthday and gave birth the next day. It was a bittersweet moment, marking the start of a hopeful new chapter for both her and her child. 

Reflecting on this journey, Dawn said, “It’s stories like hers that remind me why I do this work. These kids often face challenges they shouldn’t have at such a young age. Sometimes, all it takes is one person who believes in them, and who can see beyond their struggles to their amazing potential. Knowing that she achieved her goal of getting her high school diploma is something I will never forget.” 

An Impact That Lasts a Lifetime

The bond Dawn formed with this student didn’t end at graduation. The young woman continues to stay in touch, calling Dawn her “school mom” and sharing updates about her life and child. These enduring connections show the depth of care that the online school offers to its students, far beyond academic achievement.

This December, the school’s annual “Winter Blast” ice-skating event will bring families and staff together, further strengthening the community.
