As a high school English teacher at Oklahoma Virtual Charter Academy (OVCA), Janelle Cox has seen virtual education transform students’ lives. As a mom, she has lived it.

After 25 years in Spiro, Oklahoma, Janelle understands both the strengths and limitations of rural education. Her daughter struggled in a traditional brick-and-mortar school due to health challenges, a neurodivergent learning style and bullying. Despite making changes and seeking additional resources, the environment simply wasn’t the right fit.

Everything changed when her daughter transferred to OVCA in eighth grade. With flexible scheduling, individualized pacing and consistent teacher support, she experienced a dramatic turnaround, both academically and personally. Today, she’s a confident high school senior involved in student council, leading a humanitarian club and volunteering in community theater, all while preparing for graduation and scholarship opportunities.

“Virtual learning gave my daughter the space to grow into who she is,” Janelle said. “She didn’t have to fit into a system that wasn’t working for her. Rather, the learning environment adapted to meet her needs.”

From her perspective as an educator and a parent, Janelle believes that’s what virtual education does best: it creates options. For many rural families, enrolling online isn’t about leaving their local school community — it’s about finding the learning environment where their child can thrive.

At OVCA, students remain connected to teachers and peers while gaining the flexibility to balance academics with family responsibilities, community involvement and personal goals.

Virtual education expands what’s possible, ensuring students aren’t limited by geography, circumstance or learning style.

The Poteau Daily News recently highlighted Janelle’s perspective in a guest column about how online learning can open doors for Oklahoma students. To read more, click here: https://www.pressreader.com/usa/poteau-daily-news/20260203/281522232519215
