OVCA High School Valedictorian Graduates Early with 33 College Credits

Stories & Spotlights

High school graduation is a milestone for most students. For one Tulsa student, it’s also a mark of perseverance and personal strength.

At just 16 years old, Zoe O. graduated as the valedictorian of Oklahoma Virtual Charter Academy (OVCA), earning 33 college credits and a career tech certification in animation. Her academic achievements are outstanding on their own. Given what she overcame to get here, her story is nothing short of extraordinary.

In 2022, Zoe was diagnosed with epilepsy, forcing her to navigate a new world full of medication adjustments, unpredictable symptoms and fatigue. The diagnosis made Zoe’s educational journey difficult. But in spite of the ongoing challenge, she pressed forward, refusing to allow her condition to define her future.

“Balancing school and epilepsy wasn’t easy,” Zoe recently said in an interview. “Fortunately, I had a lot more opportunities thanks to OVCA. Virtual education gave me the flexibility and support I needed to stay on track while managing my condition, even during the toughest days.”

The virtual learning environment allowed Zoe to customize her schedule around doctor appointments and recovery periods. With support from teachers, counselors and other staff, she was empowered to take further control of her education.

She is a proud recipient of the Girl Scout Gold Award, which is the highest honor in Girl Scouting. What’s more, Zoe even broke traditional boundaries by joining the Boy Scouts of America, where she’s currently completing her Eagle Scout project — one of the highest achievements in scouting.

“Leadership isn’t about titles,” Zoe said. “It’s about showing up and doing the hard work, even when it’s not easy. I’ve enjoyed giving back to my community, and I have received an overwhelming amount of support in return.”

This fall, Zoe will attend Oklahoma Christian University to major in gaming and animation. She also has plans to pursue minors in creative writing and music — two disciplines that reflect her range of talents and interests.

Her goal? To design immersive gaming experiences that empower others and tell meaningful stories, much like her own.
