At Oklahoma Virtual Charter Academy (OVCA), educators go beyond the traditional boundaries of teaching to create innovative programs that inspire and engage students. One such educator is Madonna Montalvo, a seasoned teacher with over 30 years of experience. Currently teaching at OVCA’s High School, Montalvo’s dedication and creativity have given rise to the Music Appreciation Club, a virtual space where students can share, analyze, and celebrate the power of music.

A Lifetime of Teaching Excellence

Madonna Montalvo has spent her career making a difference in the lives of her students. For the past five years, she has been a pivotal part of the school, focusing on students with intellectual disabilities. Her extensive experience also includes teaching students with emotional needs , although she notes that working in this field virtually presents unique challenges and opportunities.

“Many of our students struggled in traditional school settings,” Montalvo shares. “Being in a comfortable home environment with supportive learning coaches allows them to thrive.”

Montalvo’s ability to foster a welcoming and stimulating learning environment is evident in her approach to teaching. She blends encouragement with tailored instruction, helping students grow both academically and personally. This commitment extends into her extracurricular endeavors, such as the Music Appreciation Club.

The Music Appreciation Club: A Virtual Haven for Music Lovers

The Music Appreciation Club was born from Montalvo’s personal experiences. Inspired by conversations with her grandson about music, she envisioned a space where students could share their favorite songs and delve deeper into the art form.

“It started with my grandson asking me to analyze music with him,” Montalvo recalls. “I thought, how many other students would enjoy a space where they could share and discuss music that matters to them?”

Now in its second or third year, the club has grown in participation and enthusiasm. Meeting virtually once a month, students explore various musical genres, from rock and pop to indie and hip-hop. Each month, a theme is chosen, such as “What makes a rock song?”, and students submit songs for discussion. Together, they analyze the elements that define the genre, such as tempo and harmony, while exploring why the music resonates with them.

Building Confidence Through Creativity

The club is more than just an academic exercise. For many students, it’s a platform for self-expression and social interaction. Sharing a favorite song takes courage, especially in a virtual setting. Yet, the supportive atmosphere Montalvo fosters allow students to open up and connect with their peers.

“The kids love sharing their music,” Montalvo says. “It’s social, heartfelt, and a little bit brave. They’re telling their classmates, “This song means something to me.”

One genre that stands out among submissions is K-pop, a testament to its popularity among younger audiences. However, the club also explores a wide range of music, reflecting the diverse tastes and cultural backgrounds of Oklahoma Virtual Charter Academy’s students.

Looking Ahead: Expanding the Musical Journey

As the club continues to grow, Montalvo envisions new possibilities, such as organizing virtual concerts or exploring the origins of holiday music. Her past lessons on Christmas music, for example, have captivated students by tracing the history of festive songs and their cultural significance.

While the club remains virtual for now, Montalvo dreams of someday taking students to live performances, such as a symphony or concert.

A Teacher Who Inspires

Montalvo’s impact extends beyond the classroom and the club. Over the years, former students have reconnected with her, sharing stories of how her teaching shaped their lives.

“It’s rewarding to see the difference I’ve made,” she says. “When former students, now in their 40s, reach out to me, it’s a reminder of the lasting influence educators can have.”
