A Lifeline for Learning: OVCA’s Flex Program Supports Student with Health Challenges

Kayden story

For seventh-grader Kayden, some mornings are harder than others.

Living with systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis — a diagnosis she received at just 2 years old — means navigating daily joint pain and inflammation. Kayden also has multiple related conditions, including a life-threatening heart issue, which all make frequent doctor visits and treatments simply a part of life.

When Kayden was younger, she tried brick-and-mortar school, but attendance became a challenge due to her health. That’s what led her family to Oklahoma Virtual Charter Academy (OVCA).

Today, Kayden is enrolled in OVCA’s Flex Program, which allows her to work from home and learn at her own pace. The flexibility has been life-changing.

“With OVCA, I can miss a few classes for doctor appointments or infusions and come back and watch the recordings to catch up,” she said.

Not only is Kayden keeping up — she’s thriving, earning As and staying connected through OVCA’s virtual chat rooms and schoolwide events.

Kayden also participates in sports, horseback riding and her church youth group.

For families like the Harrisons, access to a flexible public school option hasn’t just changed Kayden’s education. It has changed what feels possible.

“You don’t want your child to fall behind,” says Kayden’s mother, Carissa. “OVCA has been a huge blessing.”
