The Oklahoma Virtual Charter Academy (OVCA) thrives on the dedication of its educators, who go above and beyond to support their students. Among them is Katie McAskill, a College Prep Advisor whose innovative programs and steadfast commitment ensure that students have the tools they need to succeed—both academically and personally.

From helping students discover their career paths to preparing them for college, Katie’s work highlights the online school’s mission to create meaningful opportunities for every learner.

Meet Katie McAskill – A Champion for Student Success

As a College Prep Advisor at Oklahoma Virtual Charter Academy, Katie McAskill has spent the past decade guiding students through critical milestones in their educational journeys. Her role is crucial in bridging the gap between high school and life beyond, ensuring students are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and resources to achieve their goals.

Katie’s career at the online school began with a passion for helping students overcome challenges. From working as an advisor at OVCA’s sister school to becoming the College and Career Coordinator during the COVID-19 pandemic, Katie’s adaptability and focus have remained unwavering.

“It’s all about giving students options and helping them see the possibilities for their future,” Katie said.

Even after the initial grant-funded period for her college and career readiness programs ended, Katie found ways to integrate those initiatives into her teaching. Today, she continues to wear the “career readiness hat” while teaching, ensuring that students are set up for success.

Building Pathways to Success: The Three-Tiered Approach

Oklahoma Virtual Charter Academy’s approach to preparing students for life after high school is grounded in a structured, three-tiered program:

1. Career Tech Programs

OVCA’s Career Tech programs provide hands-on training in fields such as HVAC, plumbing, and cosmetology. Starting in 11th grade, students can enroll in these free programs, earning high school credit while gaining certifications that allow them to enter the workforce directly after graduation.

“You can graduate with a cosmetology certification, work while supporting yourself, and still pursue college if you want,” Katie explained.

2. Concurrent Enrollment

Through the online school’s concurrent enrollment program, students can start earning college credits as early as 11th grade. With tuition covered by the state, students can complete up to 31 credit hours—nearly half an associate’s degree—before graduating high school.

“It’s a two-for-one deal,” Katie said. “These classes count for both high school and college credit, making them a cost-effective way for students to get ahead.”

Katie has also fostered partnerships with institutions like Tulsa Community College (TCC), where students enjoy free textbooks and minimal fees. For those needing extra support, the school offers a $5,000 scholarship fund to help cover additional costs.

3. Internship Opportunities

Within the school, Katie led internship programs, which offer students hands-on experience in their fields of interest.

In the virtual internship program, students develop resumes, practice interview skills, and explore career options through projects and job shadowing.

The on-the-ground program allows students to earn elective credits for paid jobs, volunteer work, or shadowing professionals.

“Many of our students are already working 40+ hours a week while completing school. These programs allow us to recognize and credit their hard work,” Katie said.

Inspiring Student Transformation

Katie has seen firsthand how these programs change lives.

“I’ve had students who came into the program without a clue about what they wanted to do and left with a clear path forward,” she shared. “They gain professionalism, confidence, and a better understanding of what it takes to succeed.”

One standout story involves a student interning with an English teacher at the school. Through this unique opportunity, the student gained experience in lesson planning and virtual classroom management, preparing her for a potential career in education.

Creating a Lasting Impact

Katie’s work doesn’t just end at graduation. The relationships she builds with students often extend beyond high school. Many students keep in touch, sharing updates about their achievements and seeking guidance as they navigate college and careers.

Katie’s commitment to fostering connections is also evident in her efforts to engage younger students. By introducing career exploration and readiness activities as early as ninth grade, she helps students envision their futures early on.

A Vision for the Future

Oklahoma Virtual Charter Academy continues to innovate and expand its programs, ensuring every student has access to opportunities that fit their goals.

“It’s all about getting the word out and giving students the tools they need to succeed,” Katie said. “Whether it’s a certification, a degree, or a job, we want them to know their options and help them take those first steps.”

As OVCA looks ahead, educators like Katie McAskill are at the heart of its mission—to empower students to overcome challenges and reach their full potential.
