November is a special time to reflect on the sacrifices made by our military families and to celebrate their contributions to our nation. At Oklahoma Virtual Charter Academy (OVCA), we proudly observed Military Family Appreciation Month with a week full of events that honored veterans, educated students about their service and fostered a sense of community.

The week kicked off with a Midwest City Parade Watch Party on Monday. Students gathered at the Enrichment Center to craft heartfelt signs for the Veterans Day parade, and the sense of community was palpable.

That same day, we hosted a Virtual All-School Veterans Day Assembly, uniting students and staff to pay tribute to those who have served. OVCA also launched an essay contest throughout the week, encouraging students to express their gratitude for veterans and reflect on their contributions.

Additionally, many students participated in a Virtual Class Connect session, diving into the history and significance of Veterans Day. With an impressive turnout of 135 elementary school students and 35 middle and high school students, the session sparked meaningful conversations about service and sacrifice.

Thursday, we focused on giving back. Elementary students created drawings, while middle and high school students honed their digital design skills in a Canva lesson by crafting thank-you cards. These creations will be shared with the Blue Star Mothers to send to active military families.

The week concluded with a Veterans Celebration in the K12 Zone – the interactive virtual campus that allows students to participate in activities and clubs, and access additional learning resources. Each group gathered at the flagpole for the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence, followed by an interactive activity that deepened their understanding of veterans’ roles in our society.

These activities were a powerful reminder of the importance of recognizing military families in November, as well as year-round. Thank you to all who joined us in this memorable celebration of our nation’s service members.
