OVCA Graduate Balanced Competitive Dance and Academic Success

Stories & Spotlights
Grace R

For many high school students, balancing academics with extracurricular activities can be a challenge. For recent Oklahoma Virtual Charter Academy (OVCA) graduate Grace R., online learning made it possible to pursue both at the highest level.

Before Grace earned her diploma from OVCA this spring, she built an impressive competitive dance career while maintaining strong academic performance and preparing for her future.

Grace trained with Chickasaw Nation Dance Studio for 11 years, studying pointe, ballet, modern, lyrical, tap, hip hop, contemporary and jazz. During competition season, she often devoted nearly 40 hours each week to dance, with rehearsals stretching from early morning until late at night while traveling to competitions across the country.

Despite her demanding schedule, Grace excelled in the classroom. She earned multiple academic honors and was inducted into both the National Honor Society and the National Society of High School Scholars.

Grace credits OVCA’s flexible learning environment for allowing her to stay committed to both her education and her passion for dance.

“The ability to work independently while still having supportive teachers and resources allowed Grace to stay committed to both her education and her extracurricular interests,” said Carolyn S., Grace’s mother and Learning Coach.

This fall, Grace will attend the University of Oklahoma, where she plans to pursue a pre-law track as she works toward a career in the legal field.
